The Philippine women's under-17 football team is headed back to Asia's biggest youth stage. The Filipinas beat Bangladesh 3-0 on Sunday, October 11, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, completing a perfect run in Group H and securing a spot at the 2027 AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup in China.
It is the third straight qualification for the program, which first reached the continental finals in 2023.
Late goals seal it
Bangladesh needed a win to advance, and the match stayed tight for more than an hour. Bangladesh hit the crossbar late in the first half, and Philippine goalkeeper Abigail Garcia denied a one-on-one chance in the 79th minute.
Right back Maya Rose Bascara broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. Noelle Granger then added two late goals, the first in the 90th minute from a pass by substitute Ariana Gementiza and the second in stoppage time after Savannah Chheng won the ball and sent a long pass forward.
Granger leads the attack
Granger finished the qualifiers with five goals. In the opening match on October 5, she scored a second-half hat-trick as the Philippines beat host Uzbekistan 4-0, then set up Chheng for the final goal. Bangladesh's 2-1 win over Uzbekistan on October 8 set up Sunday's decisive meeting.
The qualifying format left little room for error. Only the eight group winners advanced to join hosts China, North Korea, Japan and Australia in the 12-team finals.
Building from the ground up
Philippine Football Federation President John Anthony Gutierrez said three straight qualifications show that the country's youth program is sustainable, with each batch of players building on the work of the one before it.
Team manager Selu Lozano credited the players, coaches, staff and supporters, and thanked former Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic, who helped guide the squad. Lozano said the program's long-term goal is to develop players for the senior national team, with the hope that at least half of a future World Cup squad will be homegrown.
Next stop: China
The draw for the finals is scheduled for December, and the tournament will be held in China in April 2027. The result adds to a busy period for Philippine women's football, with the senior Filipinas preparing for their second straight FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027.
